Visualising Empathy through Cold Wax & Oils

My cold wax and oil paintings are informed by my embodied experience of the landscape. As I embody and engage with the landscape that surrounds me, be it in the country, by the sea, or in the city, I respond empathically using all of my senses - each time responding emotionally, physically, and psychologically. My experience becomes a journey through time and space, which becomes embedded in my cold wax and oil painting. In my studio, each new artwork becomes a construction. I carefully build up each new layer of cold wax and oils, increasing the density, luminosity and transparency. Sometimes I work slowly, other times my work takes on a more frantic pace, as I build up the layers, or strip back each piece to reveal hidden elements in each layer. Layer upon layer, these works speak to the complexity of my affective experience and sensory engagement with the landscape - reflected through a multitude of colours, symbols, marks, textures and words.

The following series, 'Contemplating Affective Landscapes' was created during a four-week artist in residence at Tweed Regional Art Gallery, Murwillumbah, NSW, Australia. Singularly, each painting measures 24 x 24 inches, while as a pair they measure 48 x 24 inches, with each piece holding 28 layers of cold wax and oils, rich in colour and texture.
